One of six prototype aircraft, it was the last propeller-driven fighter to serve with the Royal Navy, it was also one of the fastest production single piston-engined aircraft ever built. The first Fury to fly, on 1 September 1944, was NX798 with a Centaurus XII, powering a Rotol four-blade propeller.
