Skipper Riely is an F4U-1D Corsair in the Disney movie Planes, and also stars
the short film Air-Mater in which he teaches the old tow truck from the movie Cars, how to fly.
Skipper was a flight instructor for VF-17, the Jolly Wrenches, (Jolly Rogers.) However, when he and his men were on a routine Combat Air Patrol in the South Pacific, they stumbled upon what they thought was a lone Japanese light destroyer. As they broke through the clouds to attack the lone ship, they discovered a whole task force. They were all shot down, and only Skipper survived.
Skipper Riley would not fly again for more than 60 years, until a friend of his needed help.
