Cannot update RealFlight

I have the original RF software, when I try to register and update the software on the register page the box does not let me enter all of the digits of my SN, there is one digit left when it stops entering. My SN looks like ########-rf-*##########

I also have the problem of not having a 15 pin port and using a 15 pin to usb adaptor I purchased online from Office Depot, how ever it does not have a switch on the cable like the ones described in all the other posts. Just a cable with ends.
The computor does not recognize that the usb is pluigged in at all.
