dumb question but?

OK guys here it comes. Whenever i set my wind I put the % speed up press enter but going back into the game it still stuck on default? which is zero wind?. i know its simple but hey ho if you do not know ask...

But surely it must be simpler than that. All I want is to come off the default setting of 0 mph and go to whatever I set it to for this session in custom . I put the wind gusts etc what i want bit it does not let me use those settings as its stuck in default. There does not seem to be a command that takes me 'OFF' default even after i have put my custom settings in?.... So i am permanently stuck in 0mph wind?

Are you saying that you can never set the wind speed, gusts, etc.?
Or that it does, but what you want is it to always be 15 mph, with 30% gusts, everytime you startup or load a different airport?
If the first, something is broken.
If the second, the beginning value is always 0 (the default). You can have it autoload at startup, for the field it starts up at. But it will reset to 0 if you switch fields. Or bind the values to a key to invoke the new when you switch fields. Or do both.
But no, you cannot change the default directly to always be some new default all the time, everywhere.

Sorry if I become too basic - but let's test:
1. Start up RF, and either from the field and plane it starts you at, or ones of your choosing, just view it like you are ready to fly, no menu showing - repeatedly hit the PgUp button to increase wind speed. (PgDn decreases). That shows wind is working.
2. From the main menu, go to: Free Play>Environment>Wind Speed> (it should be at whatever speed you had from above) and set some very high value. Go back to Free Play < Fly. It should be blowing you around a lot.
You can change aircraft, and the set speed should persist.
If you change flying fields, the wind will reset back to the default of 0 - you have to use the keys, or go into the menu to make changes. (or have built a custom key command like the prior notes talk about)

The other wind settings (gusts, etc.) are under Settings>Wind. Keyboard commands can be found in the Help section.

If doing the above fails, then something is broken or however you are "going in game" makes it think you are selecting a different flying site.

Option 1 just never worked. Hitting the up and down keys did nothing . However, at option 2 i could set the wind speed however, the wind gusts were totally ott. Setting the speed at, say, 15mph was more like 40 mph gusts, and even at 10 mph gusts it was like 20+. Something is obviously very wrong somewhere?

Are you sure you used the PgUp and PgDn keys, and not the "" and "" keys?? You should get some momentary green text in the lower left corner confirming what the wind speed is currently set at.

Over in Settings>Wind you can set the range of Gusts, as a % (higher= happens more often), Wind Variance - how much the overall wind tends to change in speed and direction, as well as Turbulence. Make sure they are all 0% for testing. Then the master speed set with either the keys or the Wind Speed setting should be pretty steady for whatever you set it at.

100%...the pgup keys will work once in the environment section so you can either scroll or use they keys but once in game they do nothing apart from slightly adjust the screen right to left. Whatever i do i can't adjust the speed in game....It is totally rediculous when i set speed in the wind gust. i set it to just 10mph then while in game it was gusting between 30-90mph??????????. it's almost un-flyable. i use the dongle so now thinking i will try the cable but I don't know whether that will make any difference. Really not happy with this do as it wants bit of software. i used my transmitter today in Real life, and it worked fine, so it's definitely not the transmitter.

How you connect the controller won't make any difference.

I don't go into any menus... just looking at the plane ready to fly, PgUp and PgDn adjust the wind in 1 MPH increments. Feedback appears in green print in the lower left corner of the window. Similarly, Home and End keys will change the direction, but by just 1 degree (out of 360) at a time.

This makes me think that, as @Flapper wondered, you are pressing the up and down arrow keys, not the Page Up and Page Down keys. While in the menu, the Page Up & Page Down keys do nothing, but the up & down arrows do change the selection. And while in the sim, the up arrow performs the Quick Look at Windsock function for as long as you hold it and The down arrow performs the Quick Look at Ground function for as long as you hold it, which probably explains the camera movement you described.

What kind of keyboard are you using? Are you on a laptop or PC? Not all keyboards have convenient Page Up/Page Down keys. If you are you using a non-English keyboard, and/or a non-English input mode in Windows, that can further complicate things.

The various wind settings (Wind Gust, Turbulence, Wind Variation) have no effect as long as wind speed is set to 0. So if you set them to high values, you may see a very dramatic difference once you do turn the wind on. And the average wind speed is representative of the wind speed at ground level; speed increases with altitude, as in real life, where friction with the ground is not slowing it down.

Thanks for the replies however, there is definitely a problem. i get none of the green print and you have to trust me in saying i am pressing the page up and down keys. I am using a laptop which has both page up and down and the arrow keys so i know the difference. And just to check i got a guy in from my club who uses it on his laptop and is completely stumped on what's going on?...I will get to the bottom of it and get back to you but thanks for the help so far but i am doing what you are asking with no result?

Does the laptop share the PgUp and PgDn functions with something else on the same physical key? In order to save space, the laptop makers like to double up on keys like that and then you have to press and hold an "Fn" key while pressing the key you want to hit to do the second function.

@Wren, thank you for your understanding as we ask these questions.

My next thought is exactly what @flightengr asked. I'm wondering if some characteristic of your particular keyboard is causing those keys to not send the Page Up/Page Down signals unless some other key is held or other keyboard mode is activated.

Try this - bind unused keys to the windspeed controls. This will verify that the function works. It is temporary, and will be lost the next time you restart RealFlight.

Make sure Wind Gust, Turbulence, Wind Variation are all set to "0".
Go to any airport, any plane, fully ready to apply throttle and takeoff.
Hit the tilde key ("~"). In the command line that appears at the bottom of the screen, type this, exactly as shown:
bind b windSpeed 1+
Hit Enter - you should get a confirmation that the bind was successful. Then type:
bind g windSpeed 1-
Again hit Enter, and see the successful confirmation.
On the far right of the title bar that says "Console" is an "X" that allows you to close the black command box.
Each time you press "b" the wind speed should increase by 1 mph, and you get the green confirmation text shown above. Pressing "g" will lower the speed by 1 mph, down to 0.

If it works, then the function is operating correctly, and your computer keyboard is not passing the PgUp/PgDn key presses as most normally do. If it doesn't work, then something much deeper is wrong.

If you can't find information from your PC maker about the PgUp/PgDn issue, then you can make the bindings permanent. I picked "b" and "g" because they were some of the few keys that RF doesn't use by default for something. If you want the permanent solution, let us know, and we can suggest more sensible keys to use, although that may mean either losing two of the standard ones RF uses for other things, or doing some kind of combination of two keys presses, at the same time, for each. Yes, they can be modified, so the speed increments in bigger steps - one press gives +5 or +10 mph, etc.
