I have been using RF for several weeks. Now when I try to start RF it stops about half way thru and displays the message "Unable to load selected vehicle or default backup vehicle". When I click on OK it closes out the screen so I can't get to any menus to make changes. Tried rebooting the computer but that didn't help. Last time I played RF I did change the aircraft settings on the Heli I was flying.

I made the change to the RealFlight64 configuration file, deleting the vehicle name leaving the line as "CurrentVehicle=STRING:"
Startup got further this time but now I am getting the message "An unexpected error has occurred" and an option to send an error report to the RealFlight Team. Then tried putting in a different aircraft on that line but still getting the "Unexpected error" message. I sent the error to the RealFlight Team.

With RF NOT RUNNING you can also rename the RealFlight.ini file to RealFlight.TXT.
RF will create another one when you start it. Then you can restore the one your renamed if that doesn't work.
I encountered the same error message a few days ago. In my case, I have been playing the RF Evolution game since 12/2024 with no problem. I believe the problem started after a new RF build was pushed to my laptop. I have tried un-installing and re-installing the steam client and the RF Evolution, this "unable to load selected vehicle ..." error will still come up during start up and stop the loading. I have made no changes to the hardware and software of my laptop except the auto WINDOW 11 update from MS. I will try playing with the configure file to see if I can resolve this issue. I am glad I am not the only one seeing this error.

Apparently my problem is caused by OneDrive moving my RealFlight Evolution folder under OneDrive after a WINDOW11 update. As a result, the software was confused and could not locate the vehicle to load. So it is a PATH problem. I fixed it by uninstalling RF Evolution. And before I re-install it, I delete (rename) the RF Evolution folder (and files) that were still in the OneDrive directory. The reinstall creates a new RF Evolution folder and files in the app directory of steam. And that solved the problem.
Renamed the file as a txt. This did allow me to finish loading RF but whenever I try to select any aircraft or scenario it gives me a "Could not load aircraft" message. Tried multiple vehicles and scenarios. Tried doing the txt change to my original backup Realflight64 and the version with the modified CurrentVehicle line. Still did not work. Any other ideas?

Sorry that's about all I could come up with.
I had this problem. Go to your My documents and rename your folder "RealFlight Evolution" to "RealFlight Evolution broken". When you start the game again, it create a new folder "RealFlight Evolution" and your game will be back to the default. If you have any custom planes, copy them from your "RealFlight Evolution broken" folder.
