Don't have a super satisfying answer. I replaced the dummy model in the attached 3ds max file with my model and then ran with that. asj5547 helped me troubleshoot and believe he did a uvunwrap to get the texture. I just used the fruits of his labor! Hope the same works for you!
What I've been doing to fix that problem is. Export an FBX file from 3ds Max and then Import that FBX file into RealFlight 9. That process creates a KEX file in your project directory which I use to Import the plane into RealFlight Evolution.The workaround at the moment is to import the FBX file into RF9 and then export out of RF9 and import into RFE.
