How horrible? Are you just commenting on the 15+ year old graphics style? Or is it really bad - wrong colors, moire, screen tearing, etc.?
To the former - a small company, operating on a shoestring, that attempted to go big with a whole new graphics engine, that the buyers STRONGLY rejected because it took too much graphics horsepower back then. So they had to bring back what was supposed to be dead to salvage sales. And then were bought out by a bigger owner who didn't buy the high graphics version in the deal. Maybe someday, but given the decline in the hobby and therefore popularity of these kinds of products, the resources to commit to a wholesale rework may be harder to come by.... Not dead or on life support by any means.
