I'm using a laptop screen the majority of the time when using the simulator but it quickly gets to the point where the aircraft is too small to determine the direction of the aircraft. Using the binocular the image rotates around the plane so it doesn't help me determines its direction with reference to the runway or pilot.

The binocular gadget works just like as if the pilot is using them. The plane's orientation will be relative to the pilot's position. If the plane is facing towards the camera in the binocular window, that means it is flying towards the pilot.
You can change through 3 different zoom modes, by pressing Z, and you can even further adjust the zoom by using the + and - keys.
