Need Advice on the Best NX10+ / WS3000T / RealFlight Evolution Setup


Hello everyone,


I’m relatively new to RealFlight Evolution and I’m trying to build a setup that closely matches how I fly my actual Spektrum-equipped aircraft.


My Equipment


  • Spektrum NX10+
  • WS3000T wireless USB dongle
  • RealFlight Evolution

Aircraft I’m Flying


  • UMX Timber X
  • AeroScout 2 1.1m
  • Turbo Timber 1.5m
  • (Other similar E-flite aircraft in the future)

How I’m Currently Organized


Rather than creating a separate transmitter model for every aircraft, I’m using one dedicated NX10+ model for RealFlight and then maintaining multiple WS3000T controller profiles in RealFlight, such as:


  • WS3000T – Trainer
  • WS3000T – Warbird
  • WS3000T – Advanced

Each profile has its own switch assignments. For example, my Trainer profile uses:


  • Switch A – SAFE On/Off
  • Switch B – Beginner / Intermediate / Expert rates
  • Switch D – Flaps
  • Switch H – Throttle Cut

My Warbird profile uses a different switch layout that’s more appropriate for those aircraft.


My Goal


I’d like the simulator to behave as closely as possible to my real aircraft so I can build good habits and muscle memory. Ideally, I want the switch assignments, rates, and flight modes in RealFlight to match what I’ll use at the flying field.


My Questions


  1. Can the dual rates and expo be modified on aircraft such as the UMX Timber X, AeroScout 2, and Turbo Timber 1.5m (excluding aircraft like the Pitts if they are locked)?
  2. If they can be modified, where is the best documentation that explains how to do this? Is there an official guide or a good tutorial?
  3. Is my approach of using one NX10+ model with multiple WS3000T profiles considered good practice, or is there a better workflow that experienced users recommend?
  4. Should I be making most of my adjustments in the transmitter, in RealFlight, or a combination of both if my goal is to closely match the behavior of my real aircraft?
  5. I’ve noticed that some RealFlight aircraft seem to behave differently than the generic setup instructions suggest, and some appear to have limited or locked flight-controller settings. Is that normal? If so, how do experienced users work around those limitations?

I’d really appreciate hearing how experienced RealFlight users organize their transmitters and controller profiles to create the most realistic training experience.

In my opinion, ideally you'd use the same switch assignments for all aircraft in real life, just to help with that muscle memory. All of the aircraft in RealFlight are designed that way, using standard assignment of virtual radio channels in RF so that the control for a given function is on the same switch for any aircraft. Everything is designed to work with the InterLink DX controller.

As you may have already found, there's a standard Controller Profile set up for the WS3000T in RealFlight. That works hand-in-hand with the Smart Transmitter File, or transmitter setup, that the WS3000T offers to install on your NX when you bind it. This post goes into a bunch of detail about the channel and switch assignments that are used by the STF and the standard WS3000T controller profile. This setup mimics the standard functionality of the InterLink DX.

Personally, I use one model on the transmitter and one controller profile in RealFlight. I used to spend too much time messing with various versions of the setup. The previous wireless USB receivers were limited to 8 channels over the air, making those a compromise compared to an InterLink DX. Every switch and button on the InterLink DX has a purpose in RF, making it equivalent to about a 15-channel radio. The WS3000T supports all 20 channels that Spektrum supports, and the STF file uses 14 of them to make things work. With WS3000T, it's so easy to go with the default setup and that's the only way I use it now. I've really stopped using my InterLink DX and now I'm using an NX7e with the WS3000T.

If you'd like to modify dual rates for a particular aircraft in RF, that can be done. It happens in the Aircraft Editor. There are probably several posts about it around here. I know I've documented it in this PDF writeup I did about the InterLink DX. The part about rates starts on page 7.

I think most people tweak an aircraft using the Aircraft Editor rather than on the transmitter. You could go so far as creating a different model on your transmitter for each plane you want to fly in real life, but binding the wireless receiver adds some complexity to that. If you were using a USB cable from your NX (that's an option - an NX can present itself to Windows as a game controller), then you'd avoid that issue and could change from one RF model on your NX to another pretty seamlessly. To stay wireless and switch transmitter models without a lot of hassle from binding, you have to override Spektrum's "Model Match" behavior. Model Match makes each model on your transmitter unique, so that a receiver won't just listen to any model on your transmitter but instead is matched with just the one model that you used for the bind process. That's doable, and we can get into that if you really want to.

All of the Horizon aircraft in RealFlight work very much like their real-life counterparts. The planes are usually equipped with AS3X and SAFE, and the trainers with SAFE Beginner/Intermediate/Experienced modes duplicate their real versions as well. Reading the manual for the real plane often explains how it works in RealFlight. If you have more specific questions on this, ask them.

If you're familiar with Forward Programming and customizing Spektrum's current line of receivers, that's not modeled in RealFlight. There is no equivalent to Forward Programming. The models in RealFlight will behave just how Horizon set them up for the BNF or RTF version. You can't simply edit gains, bank angle limits, or other receiver settings in the Aircraft Editor. However, there is a way to make a custom receiver setup in RF. It's very advanced, and is going to take some work with a real Spektrum receiver and then getting the configuration of that receiver out to a file. If the aircraft doesn't already have a Spektrum Plus Flight Controller in it, you'll have to add one using the Aircraft Editor (replacing a Spektrum Flight Controller that might be there), and then you'll need some data from a real receiver configuration file to make it work. I have gone through this process myself to drastically improve (in my opinion) how the Apprentice S15e works in RF. I have one of those planes, I installed that unique SAFE receiver in other planes, and enjoyed them for years. The way the S15e is modeled in RF handles like a Mini Apprentice, not the S15e. When RF released that Spektrum Plus Controller, I was on a mission to learn the process and make a version of the S15e that has much more accurate behavior from the receiver. That aircraft variant is posted here. I know how it works, but I haven't done a writeup for it yet. I have a feeling I'm the only one who has tried it! I have repeated the process for a few other models in RF for which I have a real plane with the S15e receiver installed in it.
 
I'm in a similar situation so I'm listening. My transmitter configurations use a "personal standard" switch assignment for all my planes. No matter which plane, dual rates are on the same switch. Throttle cut is on its switch.
Now I install the WS3000T and while it works great. My issue is switch assignments are per "Spektrum standard" and not my "personal standard."
I haven't tried it yet but I'm thinking I just need to edit the planes transmitter configuration that is bound to the WS3000T to change the switch assignment to align with my "personal standard", does that sound about right?
 
Excellent reply and information - thank you for your reply. It seems that with the aircraft I have, I am stuck with Spektrums default settings. If I recalibrate the transmitter for each aircraft with specific switch assignments, is this a plausible solution? Trying to modify my specific aircraft with in Realflight Evolution I’m finding to be a very difficult task. Even Chat GP, screeenshots provided, said it’s difficult and not recommended. Your your advice? Thank you!
 
It's not that difficult to change the default switch assignments to something that's more to your liking. But to do that on an aircraft-by-aircraft basis is going to be a lot of hassle. I have a guide here that includes a lot of detail about editing the Controller Profile.

Are you trying to edit more than just rates?

There is a manual for RealFlight. It's just not easy to find. And it says 9.5 instead of Evolution, but it's all practically the same with the exception of the main menu system. Evolution introduced a new set of menus that's activated by the ESC key or a button on the InterLink DX controller. You can make your screen look like 9.5 with the traditional Windows menu bar across the top. How to do that is here. Then Evolution will match the manual.

I only have three planes with more to come in the future. I was reading the AeroScout manual tonight and what I found strange is, they have dual rates and expo assigned to three different switch assignments each separate control surface. I’d prefer to have dual rates assigned to one, three position switch were all surfaces were assigned to a a specific switch position. Each position corresponds to Beginner, Intermediate, and expert. Switch B would be ideal for this. Switch A controls SAFE on and off. Can the actual plane and Realflight be setup like this? It feels like both Realflight and horizon hobbies tries to force you down a specific path.
 
With a programmable transmitter such as the NX10, you can have as much flexibility as you like.

The suggestions in the manual and the the transmitter setups that you can download from Horizon are created by the people who design and test the BNF planes. A lot of people become dependent on the downloadable setups and never learn how to program their transmitter, and that's unfortunate because you'll miss out on a lot of features of the radio if you don't learn how it works. I understand why that feels like they're "forcing you down a specific path", but if you compare those setups across many planes, they're actually quite inconsistent.

Some background...

The switch assignments in RealFlight for the InterLink DX mimic a lot of the traditional settings for things going back for a couple of decades. Spektrum's history is rooted in how JR radios worked. If you were to pick up a 1st generation DX8, it really did force you down a certain path because each switch had a name (not "A", "B", "C", etc.) and could only do certain things. The traditions represent a cross between airplanes and helicopters.
  • Switch A - Gear Up/Down
  • Switch B - Transmitter Flight Modes (big on helis, not so much on planes but you might find uses for that with planes too)
  • Switch C - Elevator Dual Rate
  • Switch D - Flaps
  • Switch E - "Aux", sometimes used for the governor switch on helis
  • Switch F - Aileron Dual Rate
  • Switch G - Rudder Dual Rate
  • Switch H - Heli Hold Mode, which made it the standard for airplane throttle cut too
When SAFE came along, that added a wrinkle to the plan in that you now have receiver flight modes. Using a switch assigned to a specific channel, the receiver would change its behavior to change between three different modes. A lot of people use Switch B for that purpose since it's a three-position switch. Why not Switch A? That's a long story...

SAFE originally came out in the form you see it in the AeroScout, with three modes. "SAFE On/Off" is actually misleading, as SAFE is a much bigger collection of functions than a binary on/off setting. SAFE has two ways of controlling the flight. SAFE self-level will use your stick input as a request for a certain bank angle. As long as you hold the stick at a certain percentage, the receiver will try to hold the plane at that percentage of the SAFE bank angle limit. Letting the stick return to center tells the receiver to go back to level flight. The other control is SAFE envelope. In envelope, SAFE lets you fly the plane normally - center stick means keep flying in the same attitude, not necessarily a level attitude. However, if the plane pitches or rolls all the way to the bank angle limit, then the receiver jumps in and stops the plane at the limit and holds it there until you move that stick (ail or ele) back to the center, and then it gives you control back. In SAFE self-level mode, you can also add throttle-to-pitch mix, which is intended to help a beginner control pitch primarily with the throttle stick and to a lesser extent the elevator. Finally, the SAFE feature set also offers Panic Mode. Panic Mode is really just another form of self-level, but it's usually set up as a special mode in the receiver that has smaller bank angle limits and higher SAFE gains so that it forces the plane back to level flight faster. Panic Mode is controlled by a different channel than the regular flight modes.

A real AeroScout uses radio channel 5 to select between Beginner (SAFE self-level) mode, Intermediate (SAFE envelope) mode, and Experienced (no SAFE, only AS3X) mode. On that channel, +100% = Beginner Mode, 0% = Intermediate Mode, and -100% = Experienced Mode. Those are the default % outputs for a three-position switch, so it all works out nicely. Panic is on channel 6, and you must configure that on your radio somehow. Normally it gets assigned to the button or a switch. A value anywhere from +25% to -150% will activate Panic Mode. If you ignore channel 6 and don't do anything to set it up, it will output 0% which is in the range that turns on Panic.

The whole "SAFE On/SAFE Off" thing came along in 2016 when Horizon introduced SAFE Select. SAFE Select how they decided to offer a choice between having SAFE or not having SAFE on BNF planes. True trainers still use the three modes like the AeroScout. Back then, Horizon didn't let us as customers program SAFE on the receivers (AR636's), so the only way to get SAFE was to buy it with that capability. But of course, not all of their BNF buyers wanted SAFE to be active. SAFE Select gives you a way to totally turn SAFE on or off based on how you bind the receiver to the transmitter. If SAFE is available, then you can also set up a switch for "SAFE On" or "SAFE Off" and teach the receiver which channel it's on using a special stick sequencer. Notice that the is "no programming needed" for SAFE Select; you can make these two choices without breaking out programming software and USB cables. That was the point.

The marketing people thought that explaining all three modes for a SAFE trainer were too complicated, and they're not wrong. That's why SAFE Select simplifies the whole thing into On and Off. "SAFE On" is really a mix between Beginner and Intermediate modes. It has self-level like Beginner Mode, and many of their models also have a throttle-to-pitch mix configured in "SAFE On". It's like Intermediate mode in that it offers wider bank angle limits, as the SAFE Select planes are not meant to be someone's first plane. "SAFE Off" is like what it says, with SAFE turned off and only AS3X/AS3X+ active. However, many people would be surprised to learn - because they don't document this - that even in SAFE Off mode, Horizon may be applying rate and expo in the receiver. That depends on the plane, and you really have to dig into the receiver settings to find it. Just like you can get into programming transmitters, you can get into programming receivers and customize all of this stuff too, including SAFE features in the current Spektrum receivers (AR630, 631, 637T, and others).

SAFE Select still has three modes in the receivers. So how does it work? Typically, receiver flight mode 1 is the mode with SAFE self-level enabled. The other two modes are set up to be identical, both with SAFE off. That way, things will work as expected when you use either a two-position switch as Switch A or a three-position switch such as B. When you use a two-position switch, it outputs +100% or -100%, which really corresponds to receiver flight mode 1 and 3 respectively.

Some of the manuals for SAFE Select planes suggest using Switch A since it's a two-position switch, but that messes things up once you have a plane with landing gear. For consistency, many people still use Switch B even with SAFE Select. And if you ever get into programming the receiver yourself, it's typical to use all three modes as SAFE On, AS3X Only, and No Gyro. You probably won't use a two-position switch for the receiver modes if you program it yourself.

Back to dual rate...

That's an age-old debate - using one switch or three. Some people swear by three. They want that much control over the rate for each channel, and the switches are traditionally laid out the way the are so that it's easier to move the switch without moving the hand holding that stick. Some people don't want that complexity and just want one switch for all three. Frankly, you'll find Horizon BNF planes coming with downloadable setups both ways, and it often reflects the preference of the person making the setup. The planes in RealFlight are a mix as well; some use Switch F for all three channels, and some break it out across three switches. Of course, you can program that any way you like to on your radio for your plane. You can use the same switch for rates that's being used for something else - no problem.

In RealFlight, you can use the Aircraft Editor to change the channel that's assigned to each of the three rates. You'll find that on the Radio tab, under Output Channels.

When you're in the Aircraft Editor, keep in mind that you're using RealFlight's channel numbers, not the numbers you see on your NX10. RealFlight typically numbers Output Channels starting with 1 = Aileron, 2 = Elevator, 3 = Throttle, 4 = Rudder. (That's "AETR" ordering. Spektrum uses "TAER" ordering.) The Input Channel numbers correspond to the numbers in the Controller Profile setup. In this case, Input Channel 5 is usually Switch F.

Because it's a computer simulator, it's more complicated to make adjustments like this than it is when you just have a transmitter, a receiver, and an airplane. But it can be done.
 
And people complain the the OpenTX family of systems (Taranis, RadioMaster, Horus, etc...) are complex!!! At least they don't hide what they are doing behind your back to make it seem "easier".
