"Real Flight 7.5 has stopped working"

Whenever it came out, I got 7.5 and ran it fine on my Windows 7 PC for years. I still use Windows 7 for gaming and off line apps. I'm on Mac for all else. A couple years ago, I lost my 7.5 disk in a move but had no problem running the installed app with the serial number on disk case along with my interlink controller. Lately, I have mainly been using the W7 PC with Steam Aerofly for a few years.

Last month, I tried launching 7.5 as I used to up to about 2 years ago, but got a notice "Real Flight 7.5 has stopped working" in less than a second of the launch window. I presumed something got corrupted with the installed app. I navigated around to find my serial number and other info showing the program was installed but I got nowhere with that.
Not wanting to invest in the latest RF version, I bought a used 7.5 disk with serial number on the case off Ebay. It was not unregistered with RF but I only wanted to run it locally and didn't care about updates. I installed this Ebay disk after deleting all previous RF stuff. It installed fine but launching it looked exactly the way my previously installed did. All I got was the same message "Real Flight 7.5 has stopped working". The RF support phone has been on "unforeseen circumstances preventing them from being able to take phone calls" for weeks.

My research tells me that this message and problem is not rare. Would greatly appreciate getting pointed in the right direction by anyone that has had this issue and solved it. Thanks for any help.

Hello,
I have a similar problem.
I used to have the full selection of planes and drones listed to play on RF 7.5.
Unfortunately I was not in a position to play RF 7.5 for a long time (about 16 month).
Today, I did find that only about 5 planes and one drone were available to play.
For all others I get the message "Could not load aircraft "Gee Bee R-2", or whichever other plane.
I still have the same PC running on the latest version of W10.
What might happen?
Can you help me to recuperate the other planes?
Thank you in advance for your help.
Kind regards,
Coolpilot.🛩️

Did you also lose your disc? If not, would be interested in what happens for you if you try to reinstall. I'm starting to think that new Real Flight users are mostly going to Steam for the application and that Horizon is leaning on Steam to deal with support which is unavailable to Horizon CD buyers. I've been a RF customer since RF4 and 6, then 7 and 7.5. Very disappointing : (

I have RF 7.5 running on a Windows 10 PC and I still have the original CD with the serial number and the original USB A controller. I want to move this to a new Win 11 PC, is there a download for RF7.5 anywhere?

I recently was told by Real Flight support via live chat that the newest versions of Windows no longer support RF 7.5. They said there are no drivers for it. My impression is that Horizon is no longer really doing much with RF CD program sales or support. It's all gone to Steam.

I use Windows 10 with an NVIDIA graphics card (1080) and RF 7.5 works just fine. RF 7.5 will work on NVIDIA graphics cards, but has trouble with Radeon graphics cards and built-in graphics of the newer processors. So if you upgrade your desktop or laptop to a NVIDIA graphics card RF 7.5 should still work on it. Yes there are lots of problems with RF 7.5 but so far it still works on NVIDIA graphics cards, they haven't stopped supporting DX9.

Still trying to find a download for RF 7.5 I do have the original DVD and serial number plus the Interlink Controller. Any ideas?

I wonder if the DVD will install on Win 11?

That depends on the specs for your computer, yes Rf7.5 will install and run on a Windows 11computer with a discrete graphics card.
Post the make and model number of your Windows 11 PC so we can advise on any help.
I run RF7.5 on my Win11 PC.

@4Pointroller, I think there was some miscommunication or perhaps misunderstanding (on which end I'm not sure!) about support in the latest version of Windows. As others have pointed out above, RealFlight 7 is not inherently incompatible with Windows 10 or Windows 11. The operating systems themselves can run that older version just fine. I have it installed on Windows 10 here. Where problems often occur is when the graphics hardware in a machine cannot run it due to lack of support for DirectX 9, which that older version of RealFlight requires. (That is at least a driver issue and may even be a hardware issue in some cases.) That is something that has been widely discussed elsewhere on the forums.

Note that RealFlight Evolution has been updated to use DirectX 11 in order to address those issues.

You said you preserved your original RealFlight serial number from your previous installation. If you use that when installing from the newer 7.5 DVD that you got, you can still register and obtain online updates. You just need to use the same password you used to register originally. It sounds like you already entered the password associated with the newer DVD, though, in which case you'd need to uninstall (checking the option to remove serial numbers) and reinstall in order to enter your original serial once again.

Here's something you can try to see if it gets your installation running again. Go to your Documents\RealFlight 7 directory and delete the Cache subdirectory. Then delete RealFlight.ini (or rename it to preserve the option to restore it or otherwise retrieve info from it later). This will revert all your settings back to defaults, but may fix whatever problem is occurring.

@tedEE, you said you have the original disk. Why are you looking for a download? It sounds like you have a DVD drive, so simply install the software on your disk as you did previously. Then register it and perform an online update through the RealFlight Launcher to get the latest available version.

Do note the potential issues mentioned above related to DirectX 9 support on your new computer. You may need to upgrade either your hardware or RealFlight in order to run. (Typically RealFlight Evolution is less expensive than adding a new GPU.)

Thanks for the fast replies guys.

The new PC is a Dell Alienware Aurora R14 with an AMD Ryzen 7 5800X CPU, an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080 10GB GDDR6X LHR graphics card, and 32GB, 2x16GB, DDR4, 3466MHz, XMP RAM.

The DVD for RF 7.5 I have is the UPGRADE version but, as I recall, it wasn't interested in the Realflight G4 2 x CD info (I still have CDs and box), it just needed the Interlink Controller plugged in to work.

Can you see any issues with that?

@tedEE, I expect that will work fine, at least for now.

NVidia is the one manufacturer that has consistently maintained support for DirectX 9 in their hardware and drivers. Despite that good track record, there are no guarantees they will continue to do so. If that changes one day in a way that affects you, you may still be able to run old RF using the DXVK workaround discussed elsewhere on the forums (a search should turn up the relevant info). But you may need to upgrade to the latest version at that time.

The 7.5 upgrade was designed for users like you who already had an earlier version of RealFlight. It requires you to use the controller from that earlier version, but you are correct that it does not need to see your G4 CDs.
