Shutting down computer without exiting RF9 and Steam

The last couple of weeks, twice I’ve gone and shut my windows 11 computer down without exiting RF9 or steam. The next time I launch RF, Steam says “repairing RealFlight” then my normal starting aircraft and flying site is replaced by the default one and the interlink controller doesn’t work any more. Both times I had to restore the …\Documents\RealFlight directory from my backup to get it going again.

My question is if I’m stupid enough to do it again, do I need to restore the entire directory or is there just a few files needing to be replaced to get it working again?
 
It most likely is corruption to the RealFlight64.ini file in the RealFlight folder. I make regular backup copies of this file for reasons like what you experienced. In your scenario, RF likely had to create a new RealFlight64.ini, hence the reset to the default aircraft/airport and the loss of the controller configuration.

The Steam repair message may indicate some other files were dinged, as well, but the .ini file is a likely culprit.

Thanks I’ll keep a backup of the ini on the PC and try replacing it, if or when It happens again.
 
Dam, just did it again. Copying a backup of the RealFlight64.ini file to the ../Documemts/Realflight directory gets it all working again. RiverRratDC was correct.

Is your Documents folder being synced via OneDrive?

If so, or maybe even if not but just for testing purposes, you can move the location of your user files directory using the steps labelled "Custom User Files Location" in this thread:

 
No I don’t use one drive.

My PC does shut down very quickly. When the PC was new, on shutdown it occasionally flashed a message saying some windows program had not closed quick enough. Can’t remember the exact message. I hasn’t happened for a long time now.

The last time, I managed to abort the shutdown by hitting the escape key, but too late as it had already terminated RF and steam so it sill reset the ini file. For info I’m using RF9. I didn’t get the steam repair message the last two times.
