The world famous “Spirit” was a modified Ryan and had specially extended wings to carry the extra fuel weight and a modified Wright Cyclone 9 cylinder radial of 13 litres capacity producing only 220hp, it ran continuously for 33 hrs on the record breaking Atlantic crossing New York to Paris flight.
With a top speed of only 130mph and an Atlantic crossing average speed of well under 100mph the Spirit was a fairly sluggish plane.
