50% Vindicator USS Wasp
Here is another Vindy in the traditional Navy blue-gray colors of the early war period. Still sporting the red circle in the star and stripped tail, this is how she looked flying from the U.S.S. Wasp circa 1941…
Red circles were “officially” removed from the Standard US Insignia in May of 1942, supposedly to avoid any possible “confusion” with the Japanese aircraft and their red sun markings…but some units began to cover them up right after the attack on Pearl Harbor, not so much for tactical reasons as emotional ones… any resemblance to the enemy symbol was found to be rather distasteful for the Pilots and Ground Crews serving in those early dark days of setback and sacrifice.
Thanks again to BrentG’s for his original EA.
