Hawker Tempest V Giant Scale AV

Twelth in the series of Large Scale piston powered warbirds designed to fly in a realistic scale manner etc. This is 50% scale with a 21’ wing span and a scale top speed of 160mph in level flight.

The Tempest was an improved derivative of the Hawker Typhoon, and one of the most powerful fighter aircraft used during the war. Thanks to its 2,400 hp Napier H24 cylinder sleeve valve engine it had a considerable margin of excess power and its acceleration was phenomenal. It was pretty tricky to fly, an example being a tendancy to screw out of a tight turn or loop if too much elevator was pulled, ( the model also exhibits this characteristic), but its performance more than made up for it.
Some of the assets of the Tempest V were its high top speed of 445mph and a cruising speed of nearly 400 mph using only 1,420 hp, climb rate of nearly 5000 p/min’
and superb acceleration especially at low to medium altitudes. All of these are vital in air combat of course.

Usual controls plus flaps on the 3 pos’ switch, front off, middle half flaps, away full flaps. Brakes on up elevator.

Use full flap on takeoff to ensure a positive climb out, half flap will suffice on landing, apply brakes after the tail drops.
