Stuka 87G “Kannonenvogel” Giant Scale AV

Thirteenth in the series of WW2 /1950s piston powered warbirds all designed to be flown in a scale manner with realistic speeds and handling etc.

This model is a 55% scale, 25’ wingspan Stuka “Kannonenvogel” (Cannonbird).

With the G variant, the aging airframe of the Ju 87 found new life as an anti-tank aircraft. This was the final operational version of the Stuka, and was deployed on the Eastern Front, Hans-Ulrich Rudel, a Stuka ace, had suggested using two 37 mm (1.46 in) Flak 18 guns, each one in a self-contained under-wing gun pod after achieving success against Soviet tanks with the 20 mm MG 151/20 cannon. These gun pods were fitted to a Ju 87 D-1, W.Nr 2552 as "Gustav the tank killer". These 37mm cannon had only 6 rounds of Tungsten shells per gun loaded in the pod so high accuracy in aiming was required.

The Stuka was pretty slow with a level top speed of around 240mph, cruise of 175mph and not very agile for the period as evidenced by the high rate of attrition dealt out by the R.A.F. during the battle of Britain over the English channel and England itself, the large amount of dihedral meant the aircraft did not like attempting a roll, (the model also exhibits this characteristic), so evasion usually consisted of pitch up, down and turns, in essence Stukas were sitting ducks against more modern fighters.

Usual controls with cannon on Ch 7, down off, up for fire. Rates on Ch5, up for normal, Flaps on Ch 6 with coupled elev’, use flap for short t/offs, not needed with a long run. Brakes on up elev’, let the tail drop before applying brakes.

Many thanks to Pplace for the original super EA & C/S
