Introduced in 1941, the twin-engine B-25 bomber was designed by John Leland Atwood. Named in honor of General Billy Mitchell, it is the only American military aircraft named after a person. Pilots considered it a safe and forgiving aircraft; they could make 60° banking turns even into a dead engine and count on control at airspeeds down to 145 mph. Used with devastating effect against German and Japanese targets, North American Aviation built over 10,000 B-25s before it was retired in 1979...
