pplace: That is very true what you said.

For most amatuer photogs, framing the object in the center of the picture is the goal so they can get a decent photo. Artistic expression and variation comes in for the more experienced. I routinely set my 'object' off center to give a sense of motion to it. An example:

I dont know if you read the instructions, but it was only STOCK aircraft and paints.

not ARRG paints, yes they are cool, but they wont win.
All are stock if you know how to look.Or maybe you do know how too look but you had no idea what the word "stock" means.
You judged it before you knew anything of it,in all the colors are stock, this no place for this clutter, drop it and leave it alone,i won,you lost blah blah blah...

Re the business about "framing":

When Jim and I were looking through the screen shots to find our favorites, there were quite a few shots where we liked the way the plane looked, but the composition of the shot overall didn't do the airplane justice. By "framing" we mean that submitters should make sure that the overall screenshot is nicely composed, just the same way as you would do when taking a photograph with a real life camera. We're not just judging the way the airplane itself looks, we're judging the screenshot as a whole.

Thanks for the info and clarification:

Back on post #5 (my screen shot) there isn't much "background" to frame the work in the first picture (front of mustang). I did this on purpose.....to give the illusion of a full scale aircraft. I have a sliver of the tree tops or horizon on the far bottom of the picture, with the aircraft banking towards the camera.

It would be very difficult to take a picture of a full scale airplane with a lot of ground in the picture (if you are standing on the ground) This little sliver of ground helps tie my picture together? I felt?

The overall effect was good, but I felt that the subject took up too little of the frame. I like your idea of giving the effect of a full-scale aircraft, but I just felt as though the subject was too far out to give full marks.

Here is an Athletic Club sequence. I like a wood grain details on hardwood floor, also notice a RimFire logo on the motor in the first picture:
