Vista Error - Installer2 MFC Application

Guys,

See any issues with this laptop running G3 with Vista?
Need a laptop to use with my G3 before I deploy.

Wig :)

Ugh, old dated laptop.

Don't bother.

Spend more on a laptop and it may last you a while.

You'll want something that is at least FULLY Vista Pro compliant just to head off whatever else comes our way in the future.

Will it work if I loaded XP? Needing it only for G3 while deployed
and school later. Any suggestions for a reasonable priced laptop
for my G3?

Heh, define "reasonable".

From what I've been spec'ing, a "decent" Vista compatible laptop comes in starting around the 1500.00 to 1800.00 mark.

Below that, the on board video is usually not up to full DX10 standards.

If you want to keep the price down, get a desktop unit.

You can get killer dual core machines for around 800-1000.00 now for complete packages.

I guess I will not be purchasing a laptop then, just wanting
to keep my skill sharp while deployed and was looking for
a $500 laptop for that purpose. Can't load software on Gov't
computers. My desk top computer is over 4 yrs old with a 64mb
video card and it performs well, I figured the laptop I suggested
had better software than mine but I'm not that computer literate.

Thanks,
Wig

This is the video card they have listed with this laptop, is this set-up
still imcompatible with G3 using DX9 which is what I'm using on my
PC
:
GPU/VPU: ATI Radeon® Xpress 200M

Video Memory: up tp 256MB of HyperMemory

Thanks,

I am having no luck getting registered, or updates

the registration problem says there is a .reg file that is read only,

I cannot find said file at all,.. ??? common files/realflight/***?.reg file?

the new-er installer will not run even in 32 bit compatability mode?

I am administrator, & the software runs,.. just will not register,

which means I get no updates, & cannot join the online fun if they have updates :(

I am very sad over the purchase of the product, & my springs broke

on elevator, but don't do shipping, so how can I get repair?

READ THE THREAD!!! Thats how!!

The problem exists! Don't be so smug as to pretend it doesn't just because it doesn't happen on your machine!

Thanks for plowing through all the insignificant banter.

I did as you suggested with DEP and the install went fine.

I have a two month old Dell dimension.

Thanks Chumpy.....

I was one of the many who encountered what seems to be the same problem as yourself... (application error whilst trying to install)You are a champion G3.5 NOW working like a ripper!!!

I've fixed the problem!!

Its a little disappointing when people point the finger at you for not doing UAC and admins. I had read the page stating issues relating to Vista, and followed them before making my post!!

It may also be worth mentioning that I work in the IT industry, and have 13 Microsoft certifications, so I'm pretty comfortable with this.

Anyhow, I have managed to resolve the problem, and I believe this info should be added to the Vista compatability page.

The Knife Edge installer seems to cause a Data Execution Prevention error. You need to therefore either:
a). Note the installer as an exception to DEP protection
b). Switch off DEP whilst you perform the installation

To do this, go to
CONTROL PANEL -> SYSTEM -> ADVANCED SYSTEM SETTINGS

Click the SETTINGS button in the performance section

Select the DATA EXECUTION PREVENTION tab

I selected to effectively disable DEP for the installer, by selecting 'Turn on DEP for essential Windows programs and services only'

Hopefully this will help those folks to get it running on your Vista machine.
Some people may not be encountering this problem because they are running a processor which doesn't support hardware DEP, or maybe they have DEP turned off by default.
Having checked this, it appears that DEP is turned on by default if your processor supports it (as best practice).

I would like to request this be added to the Vista issues page, and I hope it helps!

I had the same problem and your DEP problem solved it for me. Chumpy you are the man!

I don't know how technology newbs would find this solution, but I'm glad I did. Thanks again.
