de Havilland Canada DHC-3 Turbo Otter

The de Havilland Canada DHC-3 Otter is a single-engined, high-wing, propeller-driven, short take-off and landing (STOL) aircraft developed by de Havilland Canada. It was conceived to be capable of performing the same roles as the earlier and highly successful Beaver, but was overall a larger aircraft.

Seating in the main cabin is for 10 or 11, whereas the Beaver can seat six. Power is supplied by a 600 hp Pratt & Whitney R-1340 geared radial.

Although the Otter found ready acceptance in bush airlines, as in a similar scenario to the DHC-2 Beaver, the United States Army soon became the largest operator of the aircraft (184 delivered as the U-1A Otter). Other military users included Australia, Canada, and India, but the primary role of the aircraft as a rugged bush plane continues to this day.

Various modifications for the DHC-3 were developed, including a STOL kit, and turbine engine conversions.

Thanks to legoman for the model. Nicely done.

Various modifications for RF7.5 to get good model flight performance.

Although this model of aircraft typically has a 3 blade propeller, I did come across a few pictures via Google search depicting the aircraft equipped with a 4 blade propeller, so I went with that.

Standard flight controls including ailerons, landing flaps, and retractable float rudders.

No wheels on the pontoons, so water based operation only.

As usual fly with the channel 5 rate switch in the “High” position.

Landing flaps are on the channel 6 Interlink rotary knob.

The retractable rudders are on the channel 7 switch. The rudders are in the low position when the switch is toggled closest to you. Don't forget to retract the rudders after take off.

This is a fairly nice flying model. Use of the landing flaps makes for easy landings,. Be aware that the model does glide quite well, so allow extra room for your approach.
