The Piper PA-25 Pawnee, introduced in 1959, was one of the first single seat light aircraft to be specifically designed and built for agricultural spraying. It was also one of the most successful, with several thousand built. Domestic USA production ended in 1982. Licensed production was done in a number of countries. In 1988 the design rights and support responsibility were sold to Latino Americana de Aviación of Argentina.
The high placement of the pilot, the rear cockpit windows, the extra long nose for progressive collapse if crashed, as well as interior safety features, were designed with the assistance of Cornell University agricultural and mechanical engineering studies.
Most of the 1,600lb payload is the massive chemical hopper. The wide, high dihedral wing is optimized for stability while spraying and allows for good low speed handling and tight turns. Typical spraying speed would be about 85mph. Various versions were built, with engines ranging from 150 to 260hp.
The Pawnee remains a widely used aircraft in agricultural spraying. It's characteristics are also ideally suited to glider towing and towing banners, so many have found a new lease of life in a role for which they were never originally envisaged.
Extensive modifications for RF7 include altering nose weight and center of gravity. Semi scale flight performance. Lands well with or without flaps.
