Yakovlev Yak-15

The Yakovlev Yak-15 was a first generation Soviet turbojet fighter developed by the Yakovlev design bureau (OKB) immediately after World War II. It used a reverse engineered German Junkers Jumo 004 engine. Along with the Swedish Saab 21R, it was one of only two jets to be successfully converted from a piston-powered aircraft and enter production.

While not a stellar performer, the Yak-15 gave Soviet fighter pilots and industry a known airframe with a new powerplant, easing the learning curve for this new propulsion system. Although nominally a fighter, it was mainly used to qualify piston engine experienced pilots to fly jets. 280 aircraft were built in 1947. The only surviving Yak-15 is displayed at the Vadim Zadorozhny Technical Museum, Moscow.

Thanks to willsonman and company for the 3D model. Apparently this red paint scheme was one of several used on this aircraft.

According to the model creator this aircraft was designed from the ground up to be a foamy with electric ducted fan propulsion. Scale details are minimal but bump map is detailed. Wingspan is 3.84 feet, weight is 3.06 pounds.

Various tweaks for RF 7.5 to get fairly good model flight performance. I bumped up the motor power to get more realistic / exciting flight.

Standard flight controls plus ailerons, landing flaps, and retractable landing gear.

As usual fly with the channel 5 rate switch in the “High” position.

Flaps are on the usual channel 6 Interlink rotary knob, and landing gear on the channel 7 switch.

For a smaller model this aircraft flies well. Nice landings with or without flaps. It's a nice little aircraft which is fun to fly.
