If Carlsberg made small, low power, jet turbine sports model aircraft ..... This 250 kph+, 1.5m wingspan, 50N (11 lb) thrust Thomas Kamps Microturbine powered variant of Nizz's most excellent AMRX_EA, is probably (no, IS) THE best small, fast, low-power jet trainer on the Swaps!

However, she's not only for hardened RF jockeys; almost anyone could get to grips with this little gem in no time. In fact she would be an ideal first jet trainer for real! (Looks like another production track, Nizz!)

Weighing 8.5 kg empty, and just under 9.5 kg with a full 1100 cc tank, she's may be light, but she is certainly not a light-weight when it comes to performance!

She's robust and fast. And after you've burnt-off about half the fuel, she goes even faster; around 270 kph (almost 170 mph in old money).
But she flys as if it's on rails - and goes exactly were you point her, and all without any drama at all.

'Beating-up' the airfield, low and fast, is really easy, but watchout because she can get rather small quite quickly too!

The weight is realistic for a 1.5m 50N powered model (because she's less powerful the structure doesn't need to be so strong, and so it's lighter) and the engine parameters are accurate. The CofG works out spot-on with the fuel tank 'bang-over' the neutral point. A full 1.1 litre fuel tank will keep her going at full chat for just over 6 mins - quite reasonable. And she's smart to boot! Well smart. A real peach, in fact! I'll take one right now!

The air brake is controlled by the throttle - close the throttle and the 'brake pops out, open the tap a tadge and it tucks away again. Simple.
The wheel brakes are controlled by the the elevator stick - push the stick to apply the wheel brakes - neutral stick (or 'up' elevator) releases the wheel brakes.

If you use full flap for take-off she does it all for herself! You may find half-flap, or even flap-less approaches suit you better than full-flap approaches; she can be landed smoothly in any of the possible configuarations. I quite like to take-off and land without flaps at all.

Although you may be able to buy a Thomas Kamps Microturbine, you are definitely able to buy his book which has a wealth of info on small gas turbines as well as containing all the drawings and other details you need to build your own from scratch! The only commercially produced item in the design is the cast metal compressor wheel, and given the speed that this spins at (and so the heafty amount of energy stored in it), it makes sense to use a 'qualified' wheel.

It is a well supported design and over the years, the thrust has been steadily increased from 33N to 50N. His book, titled: Model Jet Engines (3rd Ed) ISBN 10: 190037191X is part of Traplet Publications Ltd's Modeller's World series, comprises of 109 pages and includes 118 photos, 40 line drawings, plus illustrations and notes. Like Kurt Schrecking's books, it is an excellent read in it's own right (or should I have said 'write'? Probably not!). Worth every penny of £14-95p.
