Fieseler Fi 156 Storch

The Fieseler Fi 156 Storch (English: Stork) was a small German built STOL aircraft developed in peacetime before WW II. It was modified for war use by being armed with a .30 caliber machine gun. It became the most widely used observation and liaison aircraft in the German airforce. It is one of the most iconic aircraft of WW II, and is still considered to be one of the world's best light STOL aircraft.

With a 240 h.p. engine top speed was just 110 m.p.h. This aircraft is not about speed; slow flying and STOL performance are what it is all about. It flies exceptionally well at low speeds, especially if using the flaps.

This aircraft was involved in many significant events during World War II. Field Marshall Erwin Rommel, “The Desert Fox,” flew in one throughout the North African Campaign, landing in trouble spots everywhere along the front lines. It was a Storch that rescued Italian dictator Mussolini from a hotel atop a mountain peak after Italian partisans captured him toward the end of the war. It was a Storch that transported the bomb that was used in the attempt on Hitler’s life in July of 1944. Less than a year later, during the final days of the war in Europe, famous German female test-pilot Hanna Reitsch flew a Storch into the heart of besieged Berlin. She landed near the Brandenburg Gate to get last minute instructions from Hitler.

Used widely even after the war, the Storch was only made obsolete by the arrival of the entire new concept for slow-speed flying - the helicopter.

Production continued in other countries into the 1950s for the private market, and over 4000 were ultimately built. It remains famous to this day for its excellent STOL performance; French-built later variants often appear at air shows.

Various modifications for RF 7.5 have created realistic model flight performance characteristics.

Unlike the other RealFlight model variants of the Storch, this particular model has no mixing of elevator with flaps, and no mixing of ailerons with rudder.

Fly with the channel 5 rate switch in the “High” position. The usual controls plus landing flaps.

This model has very good STOL performance.

Flying tip: for STOL landing, don't use full flaps - use roughly half flaps. Full flaps would be used for extremely slow flying.

This is a surprisingly good model. A nice addition for your RealFlight hangar.
