Did you ever experiment with HDR reflections?
they are pretty cool
will give some cool looks to your canopies and reflective surfaces
I know it's not a plane, but i also attached a render of an Audi A4 i was working on for a while, to show the shadows and lighting of a spot light
The wheel is just a chrome texture i worked on, with an HDR image as the environment. With a light, the wheel reflects the environment.
However, the picture must be a 360* panorama.

When it comes to lights and rendering I am a complete idiot! I tried to do what nemo suggested but couldn't get it to work and I've never even heard of "HDR reflections". That wheel rendering looks awesome and the Audi model looks like its going to be great also.
At work we use max for rendering projects (that were modelled in autocad) and I just merge in a set of "lights" that were set up by someone else and then render to a suitable print size.

you can also search for hdr images on google for reflections.
EDIT: I have been fooling around a little, and came up with these.
just some chrome spheres. Notice they reflect each other, the floor, and environment.
there are no lights in this scene, no cameras, just the perspective view and the floor and spheres.
The second pic is with greater output from the HDR
Could make a nice silver tea set hahahaha
